PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

As further confirmation of Taleggio’s ancient traditions, it was granted DO status (Designation of Origin) in 1988 following a government decree (D.P.R. 15.9.1988).

It was subsequently also granted PDO status (Protected Designation of Origin) in 1996, thanks to another government regulation (CE 1107/96). Therefore, Taleggio is one of a group of Italian cheese which are safeguarded by the EU.

This means that all aspects of its production and ageing – including the origin of the milk used – must take place within a strictly confined area which is regulated by Italian and EU legislation.
Taleggio can be produced in Lombardy (near Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Milano and Pavia), in Piedmont (around Novara) and in Veneto (around Treviso).
