PDO – Protected Designation of Origin

As further confirmation of Taleggio’s ancient traditions, it was granted DO status (Designation of Origin) in 1988 following a government decree (D.P.R. 15.9.1988).

It was subsequently also granted PDO status (Protected Designation of Origin) in 1996, thanks to another government regulation (CE 1107/96). Therefore, Taleggio is one of a group of Italian cheese which are safeguarded by the EU.

This means that all aspects of its production and ageing – including the origin of the milk used – must take place within a strictly confined area which is regulated by Italian and EU legislation.
Taleggio can be produced in Lombardy (near Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Cremona, Lecco, Lodi, Milano, Monza-Brianza and Pavia), in Piedmont (around Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) and in Veneto (around Treviso).
